Chapter 6 - A Village Assembles

The days turned into weeks, and the community began to rally around the Miller family. Once Owen brought the details of the case to the police chief, the department launched an aggressive advocacy campaign. They contacted the veterans' affairs office, cutting through the bureaucratic red tape that had blocked Elena's benefits.
Meanwhile, Owen’s home became a sanctuary for Juni. Every afternoon after school, he would pick her up, take her to the hospital to visit Rowan—who was rapidly gaining weight and turning into a chubby, smiling baby—and then they would visit Elena, whose heart function was steadily improving with proper medication and rest.
One evening, Owen’s living room was filled with members of the local police union and a few neighbors. They had organized a rotating schedule to completely renovate the Millers' dilapidated house on Alder Lane.
"We’ve got the roofing materials donated by the hardware store," one of Owen’s fellow officers, Martinez, said, pointing to a blueprint on the coffee table. "And the local church group is coming in this weekend to completely redo the plumbing and the kitchen. No more stretched-out formula because of leaky pipes or broken appliances."
Juni sat on the floor, coloring a picture of a house with a bright yellow sun. She listened to the adults talking, her mind processing a strange, new concept: she wasn't the only one trying to fix things anymore. There was a whole army of people standing behind her.
"Owen?" Juni said later that night, as he was tucking her into bed.
"Yeah, kiddo?"
"Why are you doing all of this for us? You didn't know us before the phone call."
Owen sat on the edge of the bed, smoothing down the patchwork quilt. "Because sometimes, Juni, good people get caught in a terrible storm. And when you see someone fighting a storm all by themselves, you don't just stand there and watch. You step in and help them build a shelter. Your dad did that for his country, and now, it's our turn to do it for his family. Plus, you’re a pretty great kid to have around."

Juni smiled, a genuine, radiant expression that reached her eyes. She reached out and gave Owen a tight hug around the neck. "Goodnight, Officer Owen."
"Goodnight, Juni."
