Chapter 10 - A New Dawn
The autumn sun dipped below the horizon, painting the Ann Arbor sky in brilliant shades of violet, burnt orange, and deep indigo. The neighborhood streetlights flickered on one by one, casting a warm, welcoming glow over the quiet residential street.
Inside the Miller cottage, the dining room table was filled with the rich, savory aroma of freshly baked lasagna, garlic bread, and sparkling apple cider. Laughter and lively chatter filled the room as Sarah, Lily, Leo, and Rachel gathered around the table for dinner.
There were no whispers of fear, no barricaded doors, and no looming shadows in the hallway. Just the simple, beautiful music of a family laughing together in safety and peace.
After dinner, while Lily and Leo were busy setting up a board game in the living room, Sarah walked out onto the front porch with Rachel to see her off.
The night air was cool and refreshing, carrying the sweet scent of fallen leaves and autumn pine. Above them, a million stars twinkled brightly in the clear, cloudless sky, completely unobstructed by city smog or stormy weather.
Rachel paused by her cruiser, leaning against the driver's door and looking back at the warmly lit cottage.
“You know, Sarah,” Rachel said softly, smiling. “I still think about that night sometimes. That very first call.”
Sarah looked down at her hands, her expression softening with a mixture of awe and wonder. “So do I. Every single day. If Lily hadn't been so brave... if she hadn't remembered what I taught her about locking that door and calling for help... I don't know where we would be.”
“She's an extraordinary little girl,” Rachel agreed. “She got that strength from her mother.”
Sarah smiled, shaking her head. “No, Rachel. We saved each other. That's what family does.”
Rachel climbed into her cruiser, starting the engine with a quiet purr. She rolled down the window and gave Sarah a final wave. “Drive safe, Officer Brooks,” Sarah called out with a grin.
“Always do,” Rachel replied, flashing a reassuring smile before pulling away down the quiet, moonlit street.
Sarah stood on the porch for a long moment, watching the red taillights of the cruiser fade into the distance. She took a deep, full breath of the crisp night air, feeling the absolute peace settle deep into her bones.

From inside the house, Lily's sweet voice called out, “Mom! Come on! It's your turn to roll the dice!”
Sarah smiled, turned away from the dark night, and walked back inside into the warmth and light of her home, where every door stood wide open, and tomorrow promised nothing but bright, unbroken sunshine.
