Chapter 6 - The Trap Closes

Dr. Blake stepped into the foyer carrying his familiar heavy leather medical bag. He expected a quiet, routine drop-off of the deadly chemical compound. Instead, he walked straight into the grand dining room to find Vincent, Richard, and me sitting around the mahogany table under the glow of the chandelier.
Blake froze at the threshold. "Richard? I didn't realize you were here tonight."
"Just a family dinner, Harrison," Richard said quickly, his voice carrying a nervous edge. "Vincent was just telling me about the boys'... unexpected improvement."
Blake’s eyes snapped to Vincent, then to me. "Improvement? What kind of improvement?"
"They ate a full meal, Dr. Blake," I said, leaning against the side sideboard. "They played with their toys for three hours without tiring. Their heart rates are normal, and their color has returned. It's almost as if whatever was poisoning their systems was suddenly removed."
Blake’s expression hardened. "Poisoning? That is an outrageous accusation, Miss Morgan. I warned you about making baseless claims."
"It's not baseless, Harrison," Vincent said calmly, setting down his linen napkin. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a sleek, transparent plastic bag containing the automated micro-dosing pump that Dr. Vance had removed from the ventilation duct the night before.
Vincent set the bag on the polished mahogany table.
The silence that followed was suffocating. Dr. Blake gasped, taking an involuntary step backward. Richard’s face went entirely drained of color.
"What... what is that?" Richard stammered, trying desperately to play innocent. "Vincent, what are you showing us?"
"You know exactly what it is, Richard," Vincent said, his voice dropping to a low, lethal growl. "It's the pump Dr. Blake installed in my house. The pump that has been spraying organophosphate neurotoxins into my sons' bedrooms every night for eleven months."
"That's a lie!" Dr. Blake yelled, his composure completely shattering. "This is absurd! You're insane, Vincent! I am a respected medical professional!"
"We have the chemical analysis, Harrison," I said, taking a step toward him. "We have the trace samples from the ductwork. We have the video footage of Mrs. Harper servicing the control panel on your orders. And most importantly... we have Mrs. Harper's full signed confession."
Richard suddenly stood up so violently his chair tipped backward, crashing onto the hardwood floor. "You stupid old fool!" Richard screamed at Blake, completely unmasking himself. "You said this stuff was undetectable! You said no one would ever suspect a thing!"
"Shut up, Richard!" Blake panicked, pointing a shaking finger at the younger brother. "You hired me! You designed the entire plan! You promised me ten percent of Moretti Enterprises!"
"You listened to him?" Vincent shouted, standing up, his chest heaving with overwhelming rage. "My own brother! You tried to murder my seven-year-old boys for money?!"
"You had everything, Vincent!" Richard shrieked, his face contorted in years of pent-up jealousy and malice. "Father gave you the empire! Isabella got the wealth! You had the perfect life, the perfect boys! And what did I get? Breadcrumbs! I deserved half of this estate! If those kids were gone, or permanently institutionalized, the trust would have legally transferred to me!"
"You monster," Vincent whispered.
Richard suddenly lunged toward Blake’s medical bag, reaching into the side pocket and pulling out a small, sleek chrome revolver.
"Nobody moves!" Richard yelled, his hands shaking wildly as he waved the gun between Vincent, Blake, and me. "Nobody touches a phone! Harrison, get the keys! We're leaving!"
"Richard, put the gun down," I said calmly, stepping slowly between the barrel of the gun and Vincent. My voice was steady, completely devoid of fear. "It's over. Look around you."
"Shut up! Shut up, you miserable nanny!" Richard screamed, sweat pouring down his forehead. "You ruined everything! If you hadn't smelled that duct—"
"Federal agents! Drop your weapons!"
The grand double doors of the dining room blew open with a deafening crash. Tactical officers in heavy body armor, bearing glowing blue 'FBI' insignias across their chests, flooded into the room with weapons raised. Red laser sights danced across Richard’s chest and Blake’s forehead.
"Drop the weapon now!" Agent Marcus Vance shouted, his voice echoing like thunder through the mansion.
Richard gasped, looking at the army of federal agents surrounding him. The gun slipped from his terrified, sweaty fingers, clattering uselessly against the floorboards. Dr. Blake immediately dropped to his knees, throwing his hands above his head in complete surrender.
Officers tackled Richard to the ground, pulling his arms behind his back and snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.
As Richard was hauled to his feet, he glared at Vincent with pure hatred. "You're nothing without your money, Vincent! Nothing!"
Vincent didn't answer. He didn't look at his brother with anger anymore. He looked at him with profound pity. "Take them away," Vincent commanded softly.
As the FBI dragged Richard and Dr. Blake out into the rain, the heavy front doors closed behind them, leaving the mansion in sudden, heavy silence.

Vincent stood in the center of the room, trembling. I walked over to him, gently placing a hand on his shoulder. He turned, looking at me with eyes filled with tears, and pulled me into a fierce, desperate embrace.
"It's over, Vincent," I whispered. "They're safe now. Your boys are safe."
