Chapter 8 - Night at the Museum

The Metropolitan Museum of Art glowed like a palace of light against the autumn chill. Inside the grand entrance hall, crystal chandeliers sparkled above rivers of silk gowns and tailored tuxedos. Photographers' flashbulbs popped continuously against the marble pillars as New York's elite mingled beneath ancient Greek statues.

Then the double doors swung open, and the room went dead silent.

Alessandro Moretti walked in. He wore a bespoke midnight-blue tuxedo that fit him like armor. But it wasn't the feared mafia boss that made every head turn — it was the small figure walking beside him, holding his hand.

Lucas wore a miniature tuxedo identical to Alessandro's, complete with a tiny black bow tie and patent leather shoes that clicked softly against the marble floor. He looked up at the towering statues with wide-eyed wonder, clutching a small wooden horse in his left hand just beneath the hem of his jacket.

Flashbulbs immediately blinded the air. Reporters pressed forward, shouting questions, but Marco and four syndicate guards formed an impenetrable human wall around father and son, gently but firmly clearing a path.

"Look at all the lights, mister," Lucas whispered, tugging on Alessandro’s hand.

"It's a museum, buddy," Alessandro replied softly, his voice carrying a warmth reserved only for the boy. "People come here to see history. Tonight, they're going to see ours."

They moved toward the grand rotunda where the exhibition tables were set up. Prominent politicians, judges, and corporate executives nodded respectfully as Alessandro passed, their faces pale with a mix of awe and fear. Nobody dared approach them directly.

Until Vincent Verretti stepped out from behind a marble column near the Temple of Dendur exhibit.

Verretti wasn't wearing a tuxedo; he wore a sharp gray suit, flanked by two armed enforcers who kept their hands buried inside their jacket pockets. He smiled, a thin, venomous expression that didn't reach his eyes.

"Evening, Alessandro," Verretti said smoothly, stepping directly into their path. "I must say, it takes a lot of nerve bringing a three-year-old into a den of wolves. Is this the new Moretti dynasty? A bit short on stature, aren't we?"

Alessandro didn't break his stride. He stopped two feet away from Verretti, his body subtly shifting to place Lucas safely behind his right leg.

"Vincent," Alessandro said, his voice entirely calm, carrying the terrifying stillness before a hurricane. "You're out of your borough."

"Just came to pay my respects to the heir," Verretti smirked, his eyes darting down toward Lucas. "Shame about his mother. Such a hard-working woman. Too bad she didn't live long enough to see her son dressed up in Italian silk."

In a flash of motion so fast the eye could barely track it, Alessandro’s hand shot out, grabbing Verretti by the lapels of his suit and slamming him back against the ancient stone wall of the exhibit with a resounding crash.

The surrounding guests gasped, scattering away in sudden panic. Camera flashes erupted like lightning storms.

"If you ever," Alessandro whispered, his face inches from Verretti’s, his dark eyes burning with absolute murder, "say her name with that filthy mouth again, I won't just take your docks. I'll scatter your family across the bottom of the East River."

Verretti’s face turned the color of ash. He tried to reach for his jacket, but before his fingers could twitch, four silenced pistols emerged from the surrounding shadows, pressed firmly against the ribs of Verretti and his two enforcers.

"You're surrounded, Vincent," Marco said quietly from behind. "Drop the piece."

Verretti’s hands slowly rose into the air, trembling. "You're making a mistake, Moretti. The police—"

"The police are outside," Alessandro interrupted, releasing Verretti with a shove that sent the rival boss stumbling backward against a marble pedestal. "And by the time they get inside, you'll be in federal custody for twenty counts of racketeering and tax evasion. My accountants delivered the files to the FBI twenty minutes ago."

May you like

Verretti’s eyes widened in sheer horror. "You... you ratted us out?"

"I cleaned house," Alessandro corrected coldly. "And yours is next."
