Chapter 6 - The Confession of the Black Widow

Vanessa stopped halfway down the stairs, keeping the barrel of the suppressed pistol leveled precisely at Richard’s chest with the steady hand of someone who had practiced this exact motion hundreds of times.

"Put the poker down, Mrs. Rosa," Vanessa said smoothly, not even glancing at the nanny. "Unless you want your final act on this earth to be explaining to the police why an elderly woman slipped and fell down a flight of concrete stairs in the middle of the night."

Rosa slowly lowered the iron poker, her eyes never leaving Vanessa’s face.

"Why, Vanessa?" Richard asked, his voice eerily calm, masking the volcanic rage boiling beneath his skin. "Clara was already dying when you met me. You didn't need to kill her. You didn't need to torture my son."

Vanessa let out a low, mocking chuckle. "Kill Clara? Oh, Richard, you flatter me. Clara did a wonderful job of dying all on her own. I didn't touch a hair on her head. Why would I? She was the tragic first act that made you so gloriously vulnerable."

She took another step down, her eyes gleaming with narcissistic satisfaction.

"Do you have any idea how exhausting it is, Richard, being a smart woman in a world full of mediocre men? My first husband—the dear departed diplomat—made the mistake of trying to leave me with a fraction of his overseas accounts. He had a sudden, unfortunate boating accident off the coast of Mallorca. The local police called it a tragic mishap. They were so charmingly incompetent."

She gestured casually with the pistol toward the corkboards behind Richard.

"When I met you at that gala, you were the picture-perfect mark. A successful, grieving architect with millions in liquid assets, a sprawling estate, and a ten-year-old boy who was the sole legal heir to the entire empire. A prenuptial agreement? Please. Paper is only as binding as the person holding the pen. If the father is legally declared insane and locked away in a high-security psychiatric ward, and the son suffers from 'tragic complications' following a severe systemic infection... well, who inherits the kingdom by default?"

"You," Richard said, every muscle in his body coiled like a steel spring.

"Bingo," Vanessa smiled, her eyes cold as ice. "And honestly, Richard, your son was remarkably resilient. I expected the infection to break his spirit—or his arm—within three days. The little monster managed to hold out for four. Screaming like a stuck pig, scratching at the walls, begging for help. It was starting to get on my nerves, I must confess. If Rosa hadn't been such an annoying, snoopy busybody, I would have finished the job tomorrow morning while you were at the hospital."

"You won't get away with this," Rosa spoke up, her voice steady and resonant in the damp cellar. "The doctors at Saint Jude have the cast. They have the medical evidence. The police are already looking into you."

Vanessa laughed outright—a sharp, clear sound that echoed off the concrete walls.

"The police? With what evidence, Mrs. Rosa? A few dead ants and some angry skin? By the time Dr. Hayes files her preliminary report, my legal team will have injunctions filed across three different counties. And as for you two..." Vanessa’s eyes narrowed, her finger tightening slightly on the trigger. "An intruder broke into the house tonight. A deranged home invader who attacked my loyal nanny and tried to harm me. Fortunately, I had my legally registered firearm for self-defense. It's such a clean story, isn't it?"

She raised the pistol higher, her sights locking directly between Richard’s eyes. "Any last words, darling? Or are you going to blame your grief for this too?"
