Chapter 4 - Shadows Over La Jolla

The red shoelace stayed on Adrian's shoe. He refused to let the staff remove it, a detail that baffled his bodyguards but brought a quiet, secret smile to Emma’s face whenever she dusted his study.

Over the next month, the bond between the strange trio grew stronger. Emma was no longer allowed to clean the house; Adrian had hired a full staff to take over her duties and re-titled her as his personal administrative assistant. She was given a bright, sunlit office next to his, tasked with organizing his charitable foundation—a foundation Adrian had suddenly reactivated after years of dormancy.

For the first time in her life, Emma didn't have to worry about rent, grocery bills, or the threat of eviction. But with comfort came a growing sense of unease.

She wasn't stupid. She knew who Adrian Cross was. She saw the armed guards who patrolled the perimeter, the bulletproof glass on every window, and the way men in expensive suits spoke to him in hushed, terrified tones.

One evening, while Lily and Noah were watching a movie in the media room, Emma knocked on Adrian's study door.

"Come in," his voice called out.

She walked in, holding a ledger. "Mr. Cross... Adrian. I was looking through the financial records for the foundation, and I saw a recurring transfer from an offshore account dated nine years ago. It was made to the St. Jude Charity Clinic in Los Angeles."

Adrian froze. His hands, resting on his desk, clenched into fists. "Why were you looking at those files?"

"I was balancing the books, like you asked," Emma said softly, taking a step closer. "Adrian... that's the clinic where I found Lily. Where her biological mother died."

Adrian slowly turned his wheelchair to face her. The light from the desk lamp cast long, dramatic shadows across his sharp features. "What do you know about that night, Emma?"

Emma swallowed hard, her memories floating back to that rainy September night. "I was a young nurse, working the graveyard shift. A woman was brought in by two men who left before signing any papers. She was in bad shape—bullet wounds, severe trauma. She gave birth via emergency C-section, but her body couldn't hold on. Before she died, she pulled me close and whispered, 'Keep her safe from the Wolf.' "

Adrian’s breath stopped completely.

"I didn't know what it meant," Emma continued, tears welling in her eyes. "I was terrified. The clinic was corrupt; the administrators were going to sell the baby to an illegal adoption ring. So... I took her. I forged the birth certificate, put my name down, quit my job, and moved away. I swore I would protect her with my life."

Emma looked directly into Adrian’s eyes, her voice trembling but resolute. "Are you 'the Wolf', Adrian? Did I steal your child?"

Adrian felt as if he had been struck by lightning. The truth, long suspected, now stood naked between them.

"Caroline... my wife... was shot in the stomach during the ambush," Adrian said, his voice cracking with an unbearable pain. "The doctors in LA told me she died on impact and the baby didn't survive. They showed me a tiny, covered body. I was so broken, so blinded by rage, that I didn't demand an autopsy. I just wanted to burn the world down."

He looked up at Emma, his eyes glistening with unshed tears. "Vance... Victor Vance paid off the clinic staff. He took my daughter to use as leverage, but when you hid her, he thought she had died. You didn't steal my child, Emma. You saved her."

Emma sank into a chair, covering her face with her hands as heavy sobs shook her frame. "She's... she's your daughter."

"She is Caroline's daughter," Adrian corrected gently, reaching out to lay a hand over Emma's trembling fingers. "And she is yours. You raised her. You gave her love when I had nothing left inside me but hatred."

Before Emma could answer, the mansion’s alarm system shrieked—a piercing, high-pitched wail that shattered the quiet night. The red emergency lights began to flash.

The door burst open, and Marcus rushed in, his gun drawn. "Boss! We've got a perimeter breach! Armed men at the north gate—it's Vance's men!"
