Chapter 4 - Echoes in the Dark

The Moretti estate sat atop a private hill overlooking the glittering expanse of the city, surrounded by stone walls and wrought-iron gates. To the outside world, it was an architectural masterpiece of classical Italian design. To Dante, as his Mercedes pulled up the winding driveway at three in the morning, it felt like a polished mausoleum.

He parked in the underground garage and took the private elevator straight to his study. The room was lined with dark mahogany bookshelves, leather armchairs, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the frosted gardens.

Waiting in the shadows near the fireplace was Leo, Dante’s chief of security—a man whose life Dante had saved fifteen years ago in Palermo. Leo was taciturn, fiercely loyal, and completely detached from the senior lieutenants like Marcus.

"Boss," Leo said, stepping into the dim light. "You were gone for six hours without a tail. We were concerned."

"I needed to handle a personal matter," Dante said, throwing his coat over a leather sofa. He walked over to the heavy oak desk, pouring two fingers of scotch into a crystal glass. "Leo, I need a complete, off-the-books audit of Marcus Valenti’s communications, financial accounts, and private meetings over the last seven years."

Leo’s eyebrows raised slightly, but his expression remained calm. "Marcus? He’s been your right hand since your father died."

"He lied to me," Dante said, his voice terrifyingly quiet as he took a sip of the amber liquid. "He intercepted communications from Clare seven years ago. He kept something from me that changed the trajectory of my entire life."

Leo’s eyes darkened. He understood the gravity immediately. "If he lied about that, he’s been building his own kingdom within yours."

"Exactly," Dante said. "I want to know who he meets when he thinks I'm not looking. I want to know about his dealings with the Marcone family in North Midtown. And I want it done tonight."

"Consider it done," Leo said, turning toward the door.

"One more thing," Dante added. "Assign Mateo and Julian to Maple Street in Bennett Heights. House number 43. Unmarked sedan, civilian clothes. If anyone so much as looks at that house wrong, I want them put in the ground. But they stay invisible to the woman and the boy inside."

Leo nodded once and vanished into the corridor.

Left alone in the cavernous study, Dante walked over to the large window. The city below stretched out like a grid of yellow lights against the black sky. For seven years, he had bled for this city, fought for territory, consolidated power, thinking he was building a legacy for a family that no longer existed.

He pulled out his phone and opened a hidden folder protected by an encrypted password. Inside were photographs from a lifetime ago—Clare laughing on a beach in Amalfi, Clare wearing his oversized shirt in their first apartment, Clare smiling at him on their wedding day before the heavy shadows of his family’s business engulfed them.

He swiped to the last photo, then looked up at his reflection in the dark glass. He saw a man hardened by war, but for the first time in almost a decade, there was a spark of real purpose in his eyes. He wasn't just defending an empire anymore. He was protecting his son.

An hour later, a soft knock echoed at the door. Leo re-entered, holding an encrypted tablet. His face was grim.

"You were right to look, Boss," Leo said, handing the tablet to Dante. "Marcus hasn't just been lying to you about your personal life. For the past eighteen months, he’s been quietly funneling shipments through the docks in coordination with Don Marcone."

Dante scrolled through bank statements, encrypted email logs, and surveillance photos showing Marcus shaking hands with Marcone’s chief lieutenant in a secluded warehouse near the harbor.

"He was planning a coup," Dante realized, his eyes narrowing to slits. "He wanted to weaken my standing, provoke a war with Marcone, and step into the power vacuum."

"And there's more," Leo added softly. "Marcus’s men flagged a ping on your Mercedes’ GPS tonight. They know you drove to Bennett Heights."

Dante’s blood ran cold. The glass in his hand shattered under his grip, red liquid mixing with scotch on the mahogany floor. "He knows about the house?"

"He knows you went there," Leo corrected quickly. "He doesn't know why yet. He thinks you were visiting an old flame or checking on an asset. But Marcus has dispatched a team to run a background check on Clare Hayes."

Dante stood up, stepping over the broken crystal, his eyes ablaze with a murderous fire. "Call Mateo and Julian. Tell them to double security on that block. Then fetch Marcus. Tell him I need him in the boardroom for an urgent midnight council."
