Part 2: The Truth He Never Knew

Part 2: The Truth He Never Knew
No one answered Giovanni.
The emergency room had fallen into absolute silence.
Marla Hensley swallowed so hard that everyone nearby could hear it.
"I..." she stammered. "No one delayed treatment."
Giovanni didn't raise his voice.
He simply looked toward Dr. Sullivan.
"Doctor."
The physician stepped forward.
"My staff began treatment immediately," Dr. Sullivan replied honestly. "However, Ms. Hensley repeatedly interrupted us over insurance documentation and legal guardianship."
Giovanni slowly turned back toward Marla.
"So while my son had a possible brain infection..."
His voice remained frighteningly calm.
"...you were asking his mother for paperwork."
Marla's face turned white.
"I was following hospital policy."
"No."
He took one step closer.
"You were enjoying power."
Hospital security instinctively moved toward them before stopping. None of them seemed eager to get between the sharply dressed man and the terrified administrator.
Lauren grabbed Giovanni's sleeve.
"Please."
He looked down at her.
"Our son doesn't need another fight."
The words hit him harder than any bullet ever had.
Our son.
For the first time since arriving, Giovanni's hard expression cracked.
"Our son..."
His eyes searched hers.
"You kept him from me."
Lauren lowered her head.
"I know."
"Seven months."
"I was trying to protect him."
"From me?"
"From your world."
Giovanni closed his eyes for a long moment.
When he opened them again, the anger was still there—but it wasn't directed at her anymore.
It was directed at fate.
"I searched for you."
Lauren blinked.
"What?"
"I hired investigators after the divorce."
"You did?"
"They found nothing."
"I changed my last name."
"I know that now."
Before either of them could say another word, Dr. Sullivan hurried back from the pediatric ward.
"We have preliminary test results."
Both parents stood instantly.
"The good news," he said with a smile, "it's not meningitis."
Lauren nearly collapsed with relief.
"It's a severe viral infection complicated by dehydration. He's responding well."
Tears streamed down her face.
"Can I see him?"
"Both of you."
Inside the pediatric intensive care room, little Luca slept peacefully beneath a tiny blanket.
Giovanni froze.
The most feared man in New England suddenly looked like a lost little boy.
The baby's tiny hand rested beside his face.
Dark hair.
His mother's smile.
His father's eyes.
Giovanni slowly reached toward the crib before stopping.
"I'm afraid."
Lauren looked at him in surprise.
"Afraid of what?"
"That if I touch him..."
His voice broke.
"...I'll wake up and discover he isn't real."
Lauren gently picked up Luca and placed the sleeping baby into Giovanni's arms.
The mafia boss who had negotiated billion-dollar criminal empires and terrified politicians around the world began to cry.
Silent tears rolled down his face.
"I'm sorry," he whispered to the child.
"So...so sorry."
Luca yawned in his sleep and wrapped one tiny hand around Giovanni's finger.
The room became perfectly still.
Lauren realized something she had never imagined.
The only person her ex-husband had ever been helpless before...
...was his own son.
Hours later, Hospital Director Ellen Prescott personally apologized to Lauren for Marla's behavior.
After reviewing security footage and staff statements, Marla Hensley was suspended pending an internal investigation for interfering with emergency care and harassing patients.
But Giovanni only had one concern.
"When Luca is discharged," he asked Lauren quietly, "will you let me be his father?"
Lauren looked at the sleeping baby.
Then at the man she had once loved.
"I don't know if we can ever be husband and wife again."
Giovanni nodded.
"I understand."
"But..."
She smiled through her tears.
May you like
"...he deserves both of us."
For the first time in fifteen months, hope entered Giovanni Moretti's heart.
