Chapter 6 - Unmasking the Traitor

The atmosphere in the master bedroom shifted from quiet despair to razor-sharp tension.
Dr. Mercer carefully unhooked the secondary bag from the gantry, placing it inside a sterile biohazard specimen container he pulled from his medical kit. His hands were no longer trembling; adrenaline had taken over, sharpening every movement into cold, professional efficiency.
“Brenda,” Mercer ordered, his voice dropping an octave into absolute authority. “Disconnect this line entirely. Flush the primary port with normal saline. Run a full chromatographic analysis on what’s left in that reservoir immediately using the portable lab kit in my trunk.”
“Right away, Doctor,” Brenda replied, her earlier defiance completely gone. She moved with practiced speed, swapping out the tainted lines while keeping a respectful, almost awed glance directed at Norah.
Mercer turned back to the maid, adjusting his glasses. He looked at her not as a piece of background furniture, but as an equal—or perhaps, in this specific moment, a superior.
“You,” Mercer said, his voice low. “Who are you really? People don’t just walk into a high-security biomedical setup and identify synthetic chelating antagonists while cleaning baseboards.”
“My name is Norah Blake,” she replied evenly, keeping her posture upright. “And I’m a maid. Nothing more. I just pay attention to details that other people are too important to notice.”
Before Mercer could press further, the heavy double doors of the master bedroom flew open with a resounding crash.
A dozen armed men in black tactical gear poured into the room, their weapons raised and trained instantly on the center of the space. Behind them strode Victor Vance, Gideon Wolf’s head of security—a massive man with a shaved head, a scarred jaw, and eyes like chips of flint.
“Stand back from the bed!” Vance roared, his hand resting menacingly on the holster of his sidearm. He scanned the room, his gaze locking onto Mercer and Norah. “What the hell is going on in here? We received an automated alert that the primary infusion loop was manually overridden.”
“Vance, stand your men down,” Mercer commanded, stepping between the tactical team and the bed. He held up the biohazard container holding the suspicious IV bag. “We’ve had a severe security breach. Someone inside the estate’s inner circle attempted to assassinate Mr. Wolf using a sophisticated synthetic blocking agent disguised as a medical infusion.”
Vance’s face darkened instantly. A muscle ticked furiously along his jawline. “An assassination? Impossible. Our perimeter is locked down tighter than a military bunker. No unauthorized personnel have entered this estate in six months.”
“Not from the outside, Vance,” Norah said quietly from her spot near the bookcase.
All eyes in the room snapped to her. Vance blinked, looking down at the woman in the gray uniform with a mixture of contempt and disbelief.
“And who the hell are you?” Vance growled, taking a threatening step forward. “Get out of here before I have you thrown off the hill.”
“Vance, shut up and listen to her,” Mercer snapped, his voice ringing with absolute finality. “If it wasn't for Miss Blake, Mr. Wolf would be dead within the hour. She is the one who identified the counterfeit bag.”
Vance stared at Mercer, then looked back at Norah. He sized her up in a fraction of a second, recognizing the calm, unblinking composure in her eyes. Security professionals knew the difference between someone who was scared and someone who was dangerous.
“Explain,” Vance commanded, his tone dropping from aggressive to deadly serious.

“Check the supply inventory clerk, Julian,” Norah said, her voice cutting cleanly through the heavy air. “He didn't leave to care for an aunt in New Jersey. He left because he finished planting the delivery batch. Check the estate’s internal security cameras around the west service elevator between 2:00 AM and 4:00 AM last night. You’ll find he carried a Pelican case marked with medical symbols—equipment that didn't come from Apex Logistics.”
Vance’s eyes narrowed. He pulled a heavy-duty encrypted comms unit from his belt and tapped the screen twice. “Control, this is Vance. Lock down all internal perimeter gates immediately. Pull up the CCTV archives for the west service elevator from last night between two and four a.m. I want every movement of staff member Julian tracked and flagged right now. Do it.”
