Kennedy Urges GOP To Use Budget Reconciliation To Pass SAVE Act

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senator John Kennedy (R-LA) has proposed a high-stakes legislative maneuver to break the stalemate over the SAVE America Act. In a floor speech that has sent ripples through the Capitol, Kennedy urged Republican leadership to abandon the traditional 60-vote path and instead pursue budget reconciliation—a move that would allow the bill to pass with a simple majority.

The Reconciliation Math

Currently, Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) has the SAVE Act scheduled as standard legislation. Under these rules, Republicans would need 60 votes to overcome an inevitable Democratic filibuster. With only 53 seats in the GOP conference, the bill’s passage hinges on at least seven Democrats crossing party lines—an outcome Kennedy views as highly unlikely.
